At the edge of Christchurch’s Four Avenues lies Gatherings, the vision of Chef Alex Davies — an intimate dining room where the philosophy is simple: to translate place onto the plate.

The restaurant’s ethos is rooted in reverence — for the farmers who nurture the soil, the artisans who preserve tradition, the hunters and fisherfolk who honour the wild, and the timeless ritual of coming together at the table.

The menu, guided entirely by the seasons, is a constantly shifting expression of Aotearoa. Organic vegetables take a central role, complemented by wild meats and sustainably sourced New Zealand kaimoana, each dish composed with restraint, clarity, and imagination.

The wine program is as thoughtful as the food: a concise yet compelling list that embraces low-intervention innovators alongside benchmark classics, with an emphasis on organic viticulture. Carefully chosen craft beers and distinctive spirits round out the offering.

Intimate in scale, Gatherings invites a sense of occasion. Seating is limited and reservations are essential, though the space can graciously accommodate parties of up to twenty. With menus rewritten weekly, no two visits are ever quite the same.
